Engineering Technicians and Technologists: Unlocking Career Potential in a High-Tech Economy
ENGINEER and MARVEX 2024, hosted a crucial discussion addressing the emerging potential in a career as an engineering technician and technologist – key roles in the nation’s rise towards a high-level economy.
Discussed at a forum titled ‘The Rise of Engineering Technologist and Technician – Engineering Technologist and Engineering Technician Career Development in the Nation’ speakers included Zazley Mat Nasir, Quality Assurance Specialist, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd and Ts. Amirudin Ab. Ghani, Managing Director, APR Group of Companies, moderated by Ir. Vincent Khaw, ETSC Chairman, IEM.
“As Malaysia races to embrace Industry 4.0 and expand its manufacturing sector, the demand for highly skilled professionals who can mobilise complex mechanisms is on the rise. However, a shortage of talent in these fields presents a significant challenge,” said Zazley.
Meanwhile Amirudin shed light on the career path for technicians and technologists, two distinct yet equally vital roles. “Technologists are involved in the design stage, bringing innovative solutions to life, while technicians execute these designs, ensuring their practical application,” he pointed out.
Attendees also gained insights into the job scope, industry potential, and credentials required to enter these fields. The industry leaders also shared their personal experiences, emphasising the career’s growth potential and the increasing need for skilled workers. With government backing for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the forum highlighted the importance of encouraging more individuals to embrace these careers and seize opportunities in an evolving industrial landscape.
“You can see in the news, that airlines are facing a shortage of engineering technicians and technologists for their maintenance, repair and overhaul, and the government has emphasised that we are still short of the ratio compared to other developed countries, but with a rise in factories and the abundance of manufacturing, the future is bright for the industry,” said Khaw.
