Kamalika Kundu, Regional Codes and Approval Manager from Hilti Asia Pacific Pte Ltd kicked off the morning Power Talk session talking about ‘Firestopping in Buildings – Learning From Past Accidents and Best Practices.’ Touching on fire accidents, she gave insights on how past accidents provide a lesson learned to improve on systems, and an overview of the elements of fire protection.
“Your planning is important, as is your active fire protection as well as passive. We also took a deep dive into the different testing standards for firestopping, looked into how inspection is done, how installation is done, and how to make sure firestopping is done correctly to protect lives,” she elaborated.

The Malaysia Association of Energy Service Companies (MAESCO) gave an interesting run-up of the government regulations and acts in the pipeline to promote energy efficiency and highlight energy performance contracting, which is a funding given to anyone in Malaysia using high energy consuming equipment.
“The audience got to know how to get the right funding and find the right solutions and technical expertise in order to implement energy efficiency as part of regulatory compliance. This would also lead to reduced carbon emissions, energy savings, and reduced costs,” said Kaveta Chelliah, Head, Sustainability Engineering Solutions, Opus Energy Sdn Bhd.

Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) had meaningful engagement with engineers at ENGINEER MARVEX Power Talk: Industry today. The organisation’s secretary, Ir. Hamzah Hashim said the session was especially important as amending their professional act is in the public consultation stage of the process.
“This engagement session was especially important for us, as we need to get feedback from the public to facilitate the amendment of our professional act.” he noted.

“We need to deploy equipment with more efficient technology, which will enable us to minimise the carbon emission,” he said.

Titled ‘Unlocking active sustainable design with energy efficient ventilation strategies,’ ebm-papst SEA Pte Ltd’s Managing Director, Thomas Schwab, pointed out that building environment is extremely important when it comes to the energy consumption and CO2 emissions. He provided useful data to support his case for sustainable designs.
“To stop climate change, it is important to educate the market on sustainable design and inform them of what solutions are available. What they could do to save energy and cut CO2 emissions,” he said.
